The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashaad (July-August) is observed as the auspicious day of Guru Purnima or Vyas Purnima. This day is sacred to the memory of the great sage Vyasa. All Hindus are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhaagavat. All spiritual aspirants and devotees worship Rishi Vyasa in honor of his divine personage. All devotees also perform a 'pooja' of their respective spiritual preceptor or 'Gurudevas'. The role of a Guru in real life is very much important. Gurus are regarded as God and as a link between the individual and the Supreme Brahm. The Guru is the only guarantee for the individual to transcend the bondage of sorrow and death, and experience the Consciousness of the Reality. Guru is Brahman or Ishvara Himself. He guides and inspires you from the innermost core of your being. He is everywhere. The relation of a Guru to a disciple is such that the Guru washes away the dirt (bad element) in the mind of the disciple and thus makes him clean, pure and pious. The word Guru means dispeller of darkness (wherein darkness is seen as Avidya, lack of knowledge both spiritual and intellectual), 'Gu' meaning darkness, and 'Ru' meaning dispeller.
